Tottenham were their usual poor selves as they played out a 1-1 draw with Everton this evening.
It was an eventful match at Goodison Park with both teams eager to claim all three points. The match had everything – goals, penalties, red cards, and some questionable decisions. The first half was quite even, with both sides creating chances but failing to convert them.
The second half saw the game come to life and Tottenham soon had an advantage when Everton was reduced to ten men in the 59th minute, with Abdoulaye Doucouré sent off for lashing out at Harry Kane. It was a moment of madness from the midfielder, putting his team in a difficult position.
Tottenham took the lead in the 68th minute through a penalty from Kane after Michael Keane had tripped Cristian Romero in the box. However, things quickly went south for Tottenham when they were themselves reduced to ten men in the 88th minute, with Lucas Moura sent off for a dreadful challenge on Keane that caught the defender above the ankle.
Tottenham should have seen out the game, but they dropped off and allowed Everton to equalize through a stunning goal from Keane in the 90th minute. The centre-back, who had given away the penalty, took a couple of touches and fired a shot from 30 yards that pinged into the top corner, leaving Hugo Lloris with no chance.
Spurs seemed desperate to give away their lead at times, with some poor passing at the back causing problems for them.
Truth be told they were lucky to escape with a point in the end. The away end must have been furious with the team’s performance, particularly as they seemed content to pass the ball around at the back without making any real progress.
Overall, it was another drab Spurs performance with little sign of any improvement under Cristian Stellini, Everton will be pleased to have claimed a point, which could be crucial for them. Spurs, on the other hand, will be disappointed not to have held on for the win, particularly as they were playing against ten men for much of the second half.
Champions League qualification is starting to look like a forlorn hope.
